The RAILCON '18 conference was organized from 11th to 12th of October 2018 at premises of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Niš.

The RAILCON continued the tradition through its eighteenth anniversary. As in previous years, main objective of the RAILCON Conference was to provide an incentive to the development of rail transport in the region, given its environmental and energy advantages.

During RAILCON 2018, 74 papers were presented by 161 authors from 64 institutions originating from 13 countries: Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Great Britain, Croatia, Macedonia, Germany, Russia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Serbia. In total, almost 200 participants attended the conference.

Almost 2/3 of the authors originate from university or higher education institutions, while the remaining one third comes from the railways, industry and railway institutes.

Invited lectures in the frame of Plenary session addressed the following topics:

  • Innovation in the field of towing vehicles and locomotives, with a focus on their performance, digitization and efficiency, autonomous operation and directions for future development

  • Research in the field of obstacle / objects detection systems with the aim of introducing autonomous train operation, carried out within the Shift2Rail SMART project

  • Continuation of the restructuring process of Serbian railways, initiated in 2005, which tried to answer numerous questions and challenges regarding the future restructuring strategy, guidelines for further development and the measures that the Serbian Government should take to finally get an efficient and competitive railway sector.

Papers in sections discussed the following topics:

  • application of modern technologies in rail transport

  • energy efficiency of rail transport;

  • modeling, design and experimental testing of railway vehicles;

  • application of modern diagnostic systems in vehicle maintenance and infrastructure

  • analysis of the quality of passenger and freight railway transport in the region

  • development of a system for autonomous railway vehicles

  • the liberalization of the European rail market and the possibility of improving transport on the corridors in the region

  • the importance of human resources for the improvement of rail transport, etc.

In the section Youth and the future of the railway, graduates from University of Belgrade and Nis presented their diploma/master theses.

The selected papers from the conference will be published in the journals supporting the conference, Facta Universitatis: Series Mechanical Engineering, which is indexed in the Clarivate ESCI list and SCOPUS, as well as in the Machine Design journal published by the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad.

We thank all authors for their efforts in preparing the papers for RAILCON 2018.

We especially thank the patron of RAILCON 2018 conference:

  • Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia

We also owe a great gratitude to the co-financiers of the conference:
